Description: The fancifully decorated horse-drawn wagon is marked "Rural Route No. 3, Osseo, Minn[esota]." Rural free delivery carriers did not more than just transport mail. This unidentified carrier would have offered a functioning post office on wheels to customers. The carrier would have brought along stamps and stamped envelopes, money orders and other postal products for sale along the route. The National Archives UK Description: Edward Crompton Lloyd Hall, high sheriff of Cardiganshire, offers advice to "Rebecca and her daughters".
In 1843 Welsh people rioted against expensive turnpike fees to use the roads, destroying tollgates set up to collect the charges. The name "Rebecca" comes from a biblical reference to in Genesis which suggests her descendants will take command of gates. Some of the rioters also wore women's clothing.

UA Archives | Upper Arlington History A teacher in the Grandview schools leads a class of grade school students in their lessons. The Grandview school system had an enrollment of 529 students in 1917. There were 20 teachers; four in the high school and 16 in the lower grades. The Grandview school system consisted of three buildings; the Fifth Avenue Grade School, the Fairview Avenue Grade School, and the Fairview Avenue High School. The Fairview Avenue Grade School also had a 350-seat auditorium that offered frequent educational picture shows free to the community.

The National Archives UK Description: Prisoners of War interned at Rennbahn in Munster, North Germany, a converted racecourse. Amateur theatricals offered a distraction from gruelling conditions at the camp. The elaborate set here formed part of the "Rennbahn Empire" where prisoners regularly put on shows.
Jack Harris served in the Rifle Brigade and was a music hall comedian before the war.

UA Archives | Upper Arlington History Students of the Grandview school system enjoy using the swing set on a playground on Oakland Avenue between First and West Third Avenues behind the Fairview Avenue Grade School. The two houses shown overlooking this playground are 1251 Oakland Avenue and 1263 Oakland Avenue. The southern side of 1271 Oakland Avenue is also visible at the far right of the photograph, and 1273 Ashland Avenue can be seen in the more distant background. The National Archives UK Description: In 1847 explorer Sir John Franklin set out on an expedition to find a Northwest Passage through the Arctic. Years later he still had not returned and the British Admiralty began to make plans to discover his fate. They offered a large reward for information as to the whereabouts of the expedition.
Many people sent in complicated schemes to locate the explorers. This plan by Stephen Stokes suggests suspending a man with a telescope from a series of large kites.

Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest The Mt. Sinai Women's Auxiliary was formed a year prior to the opening of Mt Sinai Hospital, in 1950. The Auxiliary operated the snack shop and gift cart and provided volunteers offering care to participants and family members. The Auxiliary was also responsible for the Mt. Sinai Ball, a popular fundraiser for the hospital. The Free Bed Fund was used to subsidize care for patients unable to pay for their care.
